Learning Through Community Engagement: A Collaboration Between Communities, the Ikhala Trust, the Hubs of Convergence, and the Graphic Design and Photography Programmes

This project emerged from a shared recognition that many inspiring community initiatives make a profound difference in people's lives but remain largely undocumented and invisible beyond their local communities. The Hubs of Convergence (HoC) sought a meaningful way to represent and celebrate these projects, while the Department of Visual Arts identified an opportunity to connect Photography and Graphic Design students with authentic, community-based learning experiences.

The collaboration was established during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that highlighted both the vulnerability of many communities and the need for universities to engage more directly with societal challenges. As part of Nelson Mandela University's Community Convergence Workstream and Vision 2030, the project aimed to build reciprocal partnerships that combined teaching, learning, and community engagement to create mutual benefit for students, academics, NGOs, and local communities.

Through the Sustainable Food Relief Project, the HoC partnered with Ikhala Trust and six community groups to support local development initiatives while providing Photography and Graphic Design students with practical experience documenting, communicating, and promoting community projects. The collaboration demonstrated how interdisciplinary creative practice can contribute to social development by producing high-quality visual storytelling that raises awareness of community initiatives while giving students valuable real-world experience and strengthening the University's commitment to engaged scholarship.
