Welcome to the Department of Visual Arts, located within the School of Visual and Performing Arts in the Faculty of Humanities. The Department has a long and distinguished history, originating from South Africa’s oldest art school, the Port Elizabeth Art School, founded in 1882.

 

We offer a comprehensive range of programmes, from the Bachelor of Visual Arts through to the Master of Visual Arts and PhD in Visual Arts. Across all programmes, students benefit from both group and individual tuition delivered by skilled academic staff, experienced artists and designers who are committed to supporting student development and success. In your first year, you will explore many forms of art and design, building strong skills before choosing a specialised discipline stream in the second year of study.
